A rat's droppings are ¾ inches long and have more of a blunt end than a mouse's. If you have dealt with mouse droppings before and you notice these droppings are significantly bigger, chances are you are dealing with a rat.

Mouse droppings are short, measuring about 1/4^th of an inch. They look like small black grains of rice, and you'll often find around a hundred droppings at a time. Rat droppings are shaped like elongated ovals and measure about 3/4^th of an inch.

Step 1: Put on rubber or plastic gloves. Step 2: Spray urine and droppings with bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant until very wet. Let it soak for 5 minutes or according to instructions on the disinfectant label. Step 3: Use paper towels to wipe up the urine or droppings and cleaning product.

Here are three fragrance lists that rats don't like: Camphor. Garlic. Peppermint oil.

Many viruses can be infectious in mouse droppings for 2 to 3 days at room temperature. Time in the sun may shorten this period, but colder temperatures may lengthen it. Bacteria such as Salmonella can remain alive for many more days or even weeks in mouse droppings.

Wash your gloves before removing, and then wash your hands thoroughly (with warm soap and water). NOTE: never vacuum or sweep droppings, nests or dead mice. This can create dust that can be inhaled. The dust may contain Hantavirus.

The virus may remain infectious for 2 to 3 days at room temperature. Exposure to sunlight will decrease the time of viability and freezing temperatures will increase the time that the virus remains infectious.

Peppermint oil — Essential plant oils like peppermint, rosemary, citronella, sage and lavender have strong botanical scents that rats dislike. One customer successfully repelled a rat by stuffing a peppermint oil soaked tissue into the rat hole chewed into the wall. The rat appeared to never come back.

Rat poop is generally the same shape as mouse poop with pointed, tapered ends and a similar black/dark brown color, but they are larger. They are usually about a ½ inch in size, so that's the best way to differentiate which type of rodent may be in your home.
