Hello and welcome to the Liverpool.com live breaking news blog.

We will be bringing you regular updates throughout the day on all things Liverpool FC, including team news, injuries, transfers and more.

Liverpool fell to a 5-2 defeat at Anfield last night, dispatched after a string of defensive errors were seized upon by Real Madrid's ice-cool stars. The Reds raced into a 2-0 lead in the first-half but Los Blancos showed their experience to not only stay in the tie but reply with five strikes of their own.

The chastening defeat will lead to big questions being asked at Anfield with the inquest into Liverpool's drop-off since the Champions League final between the two sides only likely to intensify now. We will also be looking forward to the game against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Liverpool has nine days to fix problem exposed by Madrid

Liverpool will not play Real Madrid every week, and it's probably a good job. But they do need to find a way of solving their defensive issues ahead of facing other sides moving forward — and, of course, will face a trip to the Bernabéu next month.

Vinícius Jr is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world at the moment, but he and his teammates wreaked havoc down the right-hand side at Anfield on Tuesday. Upcoming opponents will have taken note of that, and not for the first time.

Ahead of facing Crystal Palace, Wilfried Zaha was ruled out last week. But on the horizon after that is Manchester United, with a game with Wolves, a side that has already beaten the Reds recently, sandwiched in between.

Klopp 'wants' three summer transfers

Liverpool is 'working on' three midfield transfer moves ahead of the summer, Football Insider reports. "The plan is to bring in at least three new midfielders and 'huge' cash has been set aside for doing so," the report reads.

It essentially appears to be saying that background checks have begun on possible targets, which is not really news — every club in the country will be doing that ahead of the summer.

Three midfielders will be needed if Liverpool loses Naby Keïta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner for nothing at the end of the campaign.

Liverpool January signing returns to PSV for incredible send-off

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has been given a send-off by his former side, PSV, having completed a transfer move to Anfield last month, with the attacker having been unable to say goodbye until this point.

Gakpo moved to Liverpool between the end of the World Cup and the resumption of the Dutch league, meaning that he missed the opportunity to be waved off by the fans for whom he previously played.

PSV reporter Rik Elfrink, who posted a video of the celebration on Twitter which you can see below, reported earlier in the week that Gakpo would fly to Eindhoven for the send-off.

Liverpool transfer news as Haaland deal gives Bellingham hint

With Liverpool set to be in the market for a midfielder this summer, a number of rumored targets keep popping up as potential options as Jürgen Klopp looks for reinforcements.

There is no doubt that the Reds' long-running pursuit of Jude Bellingham will dominate the headlines in the months to come, with suitors from practically every elite club in Europe lining up to win the race for his signature. It is not the first time a Borussia Dortmund player has been the subject of a transfer tussle in recent times, however, with the Erling Haaland saga last year likely offering hints as to how events may unfold in the coming summer.

One rumor that also refuses to go away surrounds the situation of Mason Mount at Chelsea, with recent speculation suggesting that the England man is in favor of a switch to Liverpool as his contract runs into its final 18 months. With the Reds on the lookout for midfielders this summer, it is unlikely that the debate surrounding his long-term Stamford Bridge future will die down any time soon.

Antonio claims praise of Liverpool star 'a bit of a stretch'

It is not often that footballers are allowed to say exactly what they think while they are still playing, but two Premier League stars have their own podcast in which a variety of topics are discussed each week where they do exactly that.

Michail Antonio (West Ham) and Callum Wilson (Newcastle) have a BBC show, the Footballer's Football Podcast, with the latest episode ranking the Premier League's goalkeepers.

Antonio, who will face Liverpool at the end of April at the London Stadium, with West Ham having been beaten 1-0 at Anfield earlier this season, had his say on Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has rightly been praised recently for his performances this season.

Carragher makes Liverpool transfer claim after Thierry Henry bombshell

Punditry can completely flip perceptions of a player. Liverpool fans obviously already loved Jamie Carragher, and had great respect for Thierry Henry too, but CBS has done wonders for the standing of Micah Richards.

It's the same story over at Sky Sports. Few Manchester United fans would ever have thought they would find Carragher even slightly tolerable, and plenty of Liverpool supporters would now begrudgingly admit to occasionally enjoying what Gary Neville has to say.

But it was the CBS trio of Carragher, Henry and Richards, along with host Kate Abdo, who caused a stir on a recent Champions League show. A seemingly hypothetical transfer question was posed to the panel, and it led to some fascinating revelations.

Liverpool miss three deadly duos no one can match

One of the statistics which you often see shared in the build-up to matches is how a team has performed with or without a certain player. When it comes to Liverpool, that man is usually Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds have won 71 per cent of the matches in which he has played, but only 48 per cent of those he has missed since his debut. That’s a stark difference, and with big enough sample sizes (207 games with, 79 without) to suggest there might be something in it.

But even someone with as impressive a record as Van Dijk has off days. He played in the 5-2 loss to Real Madrid earlier this week, the debacle in Naples last September and the infamous 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa, for instance. Simply looking at a player’s personal win percentage does not cover every eventuality.

Jürgen Klopp has new Liverpool transfer dilemma

For the vast majority of the season, it appeared as though Liverpool's struggles had been down to a lack of shape in midfield after failing to address depleting options at Jürgen Klopp's disposal. But after an even more severe drop in form following the turn of the year, that diagnosis has to be re-evaluated.

Liverpool's midfield has looked a lot better since the emergence of Stefan Bajčetić, and yet in spite of those improvements, Liverpool has still struggled. In just nine games in 2023, the Reds have conceded 18 goals. To put that into perspective, last season, Liverpool conceded just 26 goals in total across 38 games. Now, the Reds are averaging two goals conceded per game in 2023.

Virgil van Dijk's return was supposed to fix those problems, but while he kept a clean sheet in his first game against 10-man Newcastle United, he conceded five in his second at Anfield against Real Madrid. That's the first time Liverpool has conceded that many goals at home in a European game in the 21st century.

Klopp just got brief glimpse of exciting Liverpool

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but as quickly as Liverpool rose to the very apex of world football, it has fallen back down equally and been knocked off its perch with equal haste. The entire season has been a confirmation of that descent, but the drubbing handed out by Real Madrid at Anfield has undoubtedly been the biggest proof of the decline.

But for those watching Liverpool in the last few months, the result may not have come as a surprise. Jürgen Klopp's side is a team in transition, and struggle is inevitable in a time of change. As the adage goes: Rome wasn't built in a day. And you can't expect to build a mansion if you haven't even laid down the foundations.

While Liverpool's struggle has been a cause for concern, it is worth putting it into perspective. Seven points away from the top four with a game in hand isn't necessarily the end of the world for Klopp's side, with so many games still left to play.

New era must beckon for Liverpool following Madrid loss

'The end of an era' is how Liverpool's night was summed up on Tuesday night. The Reds faced Real Madrid in a Hollywood clash at Anfield, but ended up suffering a humiliating 5-2 defeat, with the holders of the Champions League running riot.

"It's the end of an era and it has been for a little while, some of the players don't have the level anymore," said Thierry Henry while covering the game for CBS Sports, and his colleague, Jamie Carragher, agreed. The ex-Anfield center-back labelled Jürgen Klopp's men as 'not right' in his analysis, describing Liverpool as a 'shambles' on the defensive side of the game.

The Reds boss must instigate an overhaul in the summer, with a whole host of players set to leave once their contracts expire. It remains to be seen who Klopp will sign to launch his renovation job, but which pillars within his current squad are certainly worth keeping and building around?

Klopp is going nowhere but Guardiola might have already met successor

Jürgen Klopp is currently experiencing his most difficult campaign as Liverpool boss, with his team ranked eighth in the Premier League table after 22 matches. The Reds have scored fewer goals than Brighton and Hove Albion, and they have already conceded two more than their total of 28 from 38 games last season.

The Anfield outfit suffered a hammering from Real Madrid earlier this week, losing the home leg of the heavyweight Champions League tie by five goals to two. The large majority of managers would be in trouble in any normal situation, but Klopp is viewed differently on Merseyside.

Despite the displays surrounding Liverpool this term, the German is still viewed as untouchable in his job. He will depart Anfield when he decides and it will be on his terms, but even though that is the case, the Reds still need to keep an eye on the managerial market to remain aware of who is worth tracking.

Liverpool can afford heavy transfer spend as strategy must alter

There are factions of Liverpool’s support that will not have liked it, but it is difficult to dispute that John W Henry’s declaration that the club is no longer on the market ultimately represents a positive.

It is not that Fenway Sports Group are perfect owners —far from it — but rather that the uncertainty of an ongoing sale process that was going nowhere was having a negative effect on the organization as a whole.

While it is understood that Liverpool was the subject of tentative interest, no party came close to lodging a serious bid before Henry decided to go public with this change of tack this week.

Clearly, the bidding war FSG had hoped for did not materialize, with an uncertain economic climate and the availability of Manchester United both playing their part.
