- Highs Emissions-free cargo hauling, spacious inside, accessible price tag.
- Lows Comparatively short driving range, no towing capability, not offered as a passenger van.
- Verdict It's not sexy, but the E-Transit offers commercial buyers the option of an electric powertrain and a driving range good enough for local jobs.
Overview
The 2024 Ford E-Transit is a work truck offering all the same virtues as its gasoline-powered doppelgänger but relying instead on a zero-emission battery-electric powertrain to get the job done. Designed for users that require minimal range or operate in an area with a robust charging network, the availability of the E-Transit is limited to the cargo version but can be ordered in the same three lengths and three roof heights as the traditional gas Transit. Commercial buyers can also spec chassis cab and cutaway cab versions, but the Transit Trail designed for camping and overlanding upfitters doesn't make the EV cut. The E-Transit has an estimated maximum range of 159 miles; while this might be a dealbreaker for some users, Ford believes it's enough for its targeted clientele—tradesmen and delivery drivers with a prescribed route. In cases where a few extra miles are required, appropriate DC fast chargers can provide 67 miles of range in 15 minutes. Though the E-Transit was the first electrified van out of the gate and sold a claimed 6500 units in its 2022 debut year, its chief rival, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, has joined the chat for 2024 with an estimated 200-mile range—albeit with a roughly $20,000 higher price tag. Further EV van competition is on the way in the form of the Ram Promaster EV and numerous additional manufacturers with EV models currently on sale or in development.
Where This Vehicle Ranks
#4 in Best Full-Size VansWhat's New for 2024?
The 2024 E-Transit receives a larger battery, swapping an 89.0-kW unit for the old 68.0-kW battery. The addition of a second onboard charger helps the E-Transit to charge at a peak power of 176 kilowatts compared to the old van's 115-kW peak. A keyless entry and start system is now standard across the board and some models of the E-Transit get updated headlamps with HID bulbs.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2024 Ford E-Transit starts at $48,590 and goes up to $53,585 depending on the trim and options.
The Cargo Van option is the way to go for most buyers as the cutaway and chassis cab are designed to be modified by upfitters for a specific duty.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Ford E-Transit utilizes a single-motor, rear-wheel drive setup. Rated at 266 horsepower, it gives up a few ponies to the standard Transit's 275-hp gasoline V-6, but its 317 pound-feet of torque handily tops the 262 pound-feet output of the gas engine. Furthermore, full torque is on tap right at step-off, whereas the gas V-6 needs to see 3750 rpm to fully display its muscle. Ford says the E-Transit's suspension system has been revised from the gasoline-powered Transit's to improve handling. When we get a chance to test-drive the E-Transit, we'll report our driving impressions here.
Towing and Payload Capacity
Although Ford of Europe claims a max tow figure towing capacity of 4409 pounds for the overseas version, towing is not recommended for the E-Transit sold in the states. The maximum payload for the cargo van is 3880 pounds ranging up to 4513 pounds for the cutaway model.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
The E-Transit utilizes an 89.0-kWh lithium-ion battery that's good for up to 159 miles of driving per charge in the longest range configuration, Ford says. Ford provides a mobile charger that can be used to charge the E-Transit at home and will also offer a more powerful charging station that can be installed in a buyer's garage. Otherwise, drivers can re-juice at public charging stations, which now include Tesla Supercharging stations. Ford claims a 180 kW DC Fast Charger can add 67 miles of range in 15 minutes. Level 2 charging with Ford's new 80-amp circuit is estimated to take six hours to bring the battery from zero to 100 percent.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn't released any estimates for the E-Transit's fuel economy. When we get the chance to test the E-Transit for ourselves, we'll subject it to our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test and update this story with MPGe and driving-range results. For more information about the E-Transit's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Unlike the standard gasoline-powered Transit, which offers numerous interior configurations, the E-Transit is currently offered with seats for just two. That pays off in cargo capacity, the extended-wheelbase, long-body model with the high roof offering more than 487 cubic feet of cargo room. Buyers with less cargo to or tools to tote can choose the regular or mid-length body size with a standard or mid-height roof. The E-Transit's utilitarian agenda is reflected in its spartan interior with rubberized flooring, durable plastic trim, and cloth seat upholstery. Still, its relatively compliant suspension tune and car-like interior bits take some of the edge off of driving a work truck.

Infotainment and Connectivity
All E-Transit vans come with a 12.0-inch infotainment system as standard equipment. Larger and more sophisticated than the regular Transit's optional 8.0-inch display, it runs Ford's latest Sync 4 operating system. An onboard 4G LTE modem provides a Wi-Fi hotspot and a complimentary three-year subscription to Ford Pro E-Telematics provides vital vehicle data and tracking features for fleet managers and includes a vehicle preconditioning feature that can set the interior climate and other functions while still connected to the charger, saving vital battery charge and to ensure maximum efficiency and range.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The E-Transit comes standard with Ford's Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance features; additional available features include speed limiting, navigation with traffic sign recognition, blind spot assist, and more. For more information about the E-Transit's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking
- Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Ford's standard warranty package is fairly basic and falls in line with the industry norm. The E-Transit offers an eight-year/100,000 mile warranty on its battery components, but Ford doesn't offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance plans.
- Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Battery components warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles
- No complimentary scheduled maintenance
