About the Programme...

If you ever watch, or admit to watch, the annual Eurovision Song Contest, then you will definately know the tune, 'Te Deum Prelude' - Marc-Antoine Charpentier arranged by Denis Wilby (Kirklees Music), which is used as the signature fanfare of the European Braodcasting Union. It seems a bit strange to follow 'Eurovision' with a classic aria, but here is Mark Williams, Principal Cornet with 'One Fine Day' - Puccini arranged by Keith Wilkinson (Lincoln Castle Music Publications). Into Russia now with a brilliant arrangement of 'Glasnost' - Dizzy Stratford - youll love it! Brass Bands' life blood are contests and with them come test pieces - technically or musically challenging extended works, and here is one of the most beatutiful - the middle movement called 'Elergy' from A Downland Street' - John Ireland (R Smith & Co. Ltd.). A new composition from a Dutch composer is now featured called 'The Young Amadeus' - Traditional arranged by Parker/De Haan (De Haske Muziekuitgave). Finally the first half concludes with music from the dramatic film,'Batman - The Movie' - Danny Elfman arranged by Alan Catherall (Wright & Round).

What better way to start the second half of this recording than with the super march,'The Champions' - G H Willcocks (Wright & Round). Next the Band features one of its finest solists, Helen Batten on Solo Horn with the brilliant, 'One Day in your Life' - Brown/Armand arranged by Darrol Barry (Kirklees Music). The mood now changes with Harry James's piece featuring the Solo Cornets, together with the Soprano Cornet in, 'Trumpet, Blues and Cantabile' - James/Matthias arranged by Bill Geldard (Studio Music). From the hit West End show 'Les Miserables' comes the dramatic, 'I Dreamed a Dream' - Schonberg arranged by Darrol Barry (Studio Music). Helen's sister, Kate on Solo Euphonium is now heard with a piece written for David Moore, an anagram of which becomes 'Varied Mood' - Ray Woodfield (Hallamshire Music) - brilliant. Finally, this recording ends with the superb, 'Born Free' - John Barry arranged by Alan Catherall (Wright & Round).
